"Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true..."

The world has been wall to wall rainbows this week and I am elated. The U.S Supreme Court ruled in favour of same sex marriage being legal nationwide in America, making them the 21st and most populous country to do so. Hooray! About time too!

Welcome to the future America, this is how it should be. As an openly gay man playing a gay character on television I tend to stay quiet on matters surrounding the issue. Not that I am in any way ashamed or non supportive, quite the opposite. I cannot begin to co-operate or reason with anyone who wouldn't want equal marriage for everyone. My motto tends to be silence is golden; I'm all for freedom of speech and democracy, but this fight is so much more than that. It's very simple actually. It is a basic human right to choose whom you love and have that love recognised and held up legally side by side with our heterosexual counterparts. Why wouldn't it?

In my lifetime I have already seen so many progressive steps in the journey for equality, but to be present now and witness this historical victory literally gave me goosebumps. We watched history being made this week. I remember being taught about the civil rights movement in America at high school and being dumbfounded that people were segregated and horrifically persecuted purely based on the colour of their skin. It has stuck with me ever since and maybe subconsciously I recognised that I too had a fight on my hands if I was to live as a gay man. When I see opposers to equal marriage or the LGBT and transgender community in the media, I am mortified for them. Don't they know that one day they'll be in the history books that our future generations will be reading?

I pity these people, I truly do. I don't get angry or full of bile. I feel sorry for them that their lives are blighted with narrow mindedness and fear because that's basically all it is. Fear. I'm sorry that they can't be open minded and be accepting of all people. They are pre-historic fossils to me. Who in their right mind would ever want to be described as a fossil? Change is good people! Bitch and moan all you want, but the world is ever changing and this is one fight you simply will lose.

Social media went rainbow-tastic in the aftermath of the U.S ruling and what a sight it was! To see the White House lit up in bright colours and supporting equal marriage literally brought tears to my eyes. All we hear about is kids committing suicide out of fear of being gay or having suffered at the hands of bullies. I truly hope that this shows them that it's ok to be gay, it is ok to be different.

I come from a strong loving family and when I came out, there was no doubt that I wasn't going to be supported. I am one of the lucky ones and I'm thankful for my family every single day. (Even though they drive me up the wall at times!)

I could go on for days talking about this, but let me leave you with a few quotes from Justice Anthony Kennedy, who wrote the decision legalising same sex marriage in the U.S: "No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfilment for themselves. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. It is so ordered."

Glasgow Times:

We said cheerio to Oor Natalie this week! After six weeks of fun, fatness and gallons of wine my best pal has gone back to Australia. My heart is heavy, but my liver is rejoicing! As a goodbye treat myself, Natalie, Lesley and Donna went to the Westerwood Hotel and Golf Resort for a day of pampering and fizz in the spa. Thank you to Rachael Given (Head Therapist) for squeezing us in at such short notice, it was no mean feat; the place was jumping. The staff were all lovely and attentive - our treatments were out of this world. I highly recommend the back, neck and shoulder massage and the lassies all got immaculate nail treatments (I drank the bar dry!) I felt like a new wumman afterwards.

Big congratulations to my wee sister Gillian, who graduates from university today! The wean has a degree in Business and Events Management from Glasgow Caledonian and we are all proud as punch for her. The wee clever clogs has already got a job with Wire Media who are a brilliant company, so it's fair to say the future is looking bright for my sister blister! Quite rightly so hen; gaun yersel ya big career lassie. Love you. So so soooooo proud of you.
