PAT Coll’s story is a heartwarming tale of the triumph of hope over expectation and provides others waiting for a transplant with encouragement that life will one day change.

The 20-year ordeal endured by Pat meant he had to accept there was no likelihood of him receiving a transplant as his body would reject it.

But finally and miraculously he received he call he and his family had been hoping for.

The grateful recipient thinks the publicity over organ donation and the Evening Times Opt For Life campaign may have helped increase the number of donors, which would be good news. But what is most important is that he found one at all.

Considering what he has gone through it may be strange to say Pat is one of the lucky ones as he has the chance of a new lease of life which so many others are denied.

In the time taken to find him his match thousands of patients have died waiting in vain for a new organ.

The Evening Times Opt for Life campaign wants to change that and the Bill the campaign inspired by Labour MSP Anne McTaggart can provide that change.

It will not overrule anyone’s wishes and the family’s thoughts will be taken into consideration.

What it will do is increase the number of organs available for transplant so others can experience the same relief and happiness as Pat Coll and his family.
