CARERS provide a vital service for those they look after and in doing so save the taxpayer millions in health and care costs.

Their role deserves recognition and they deserve the best possible support services we can provide.

It is understandable, therefore, that Glasgow’s carers are worried about a possible change in support service provider as a result of the city council’s decision to put the services out to tender.

They fear any change could lead to a reduction in the service they get.

If maintenance of standards is a requirement of the tender then that should be less of an issue, and whoever delivers the contract should be of the highest quality.

However, there is a question of who takes these decisions in the first place and who is accountable to the taxpayer.

At a time when budgets are scarce and managing resources is the most delicate of balancing acts, the council is right to look at ways of getting best value for the taxpayer. However, in doing so it must be ensured decisions are taken for the right reason, which is to protect the vital services that are a priority for the people.

Political points are, of course, being scored as by-elections loom.

It is ultimately the councillors who are in charge and it is they who answer to the people. They are quick to claim credit for success so they must take responsibility and explain unpopular decisions.
