Welcome to Music And The City. I'm thrilled to be writing my own column for The Evening Times! I'll be here every fortnight talking all things music, chatting to bands and sharing my (mostly drunken) stories with you!

Glasgow Times:

I thought I'd start by telling you a little bit about myself. I am the manager of The Scottish Music Industry Association, an organisation that represents music businesses and aims to strengthen and champion the Scottish music industry. I've worked for The SMIA for six years and I love my job, there's always something different going on and the music industry is full of colourful characters! Our biggest project The Scottish Album of The Year (SAY) Award just wrapped up for the fourth year with a ceremony at the 02 ABC in June. This year's shortlist included Glasgow duo Honeyblood, Mercury Prize winners Young Fathers and Paisley's own Paolo Nutini who joined us at the ceremony to see Kathryn Joseph's Bones You Have Thrown Me And Blood I've Spilled be crowned Scottish album of the year.

Gigs of the week

That brings me round quite nicely to one of my recommended gigs of the week, Kathryn Joseph at the Hug And Pint tomorrow night, Saturday, August 1. Right seriously, if you haven't listened to Kathryn's album yet just do it. It's amazing. Beautiful, tender, raw and emotional, I guarantee there will be some of you who haven't listened to Kathryn's music yet who will fall in love with this record. Don't dip in, just give yourself up to it and listen to the entire thing. And if like me you're weeping by the time you get to The Crow, go to Hit The Fan Records and buy the CD.  Tweet me at @carlycoop and let me know what you think. I can't wait to see Kathryn play on Saturday and I haven't been to the newly opened Hug And Pint (previously The Liquid Ship on Great Western Road) so I'm looking forward to seeing what they've done with the space! I love that the venue's name was inspired by Arab Strap's album Monday At The Hug and Pint and Aidan Moffat even designed the logo. Tonight (Friday 31st) Edinburgh's Man Of Moon are playing the venue. You can buy tickets here.

The weather has been so bad I keep forgetting that it's actually summer! To the point where I was having a conversation the other day about buying a bike and I said 'och I might wait until the summer' before I was reminded that it's the end of July. What a dummy! I think we might have to accept that this is probably as good as it's going to get. So clean up your T In The Park wellies and get your waterproofs on because it's still festival season and there are some brilliant outdoor music events taking place in Scotland over the next couple of weeks.

Mumford And Sons' Gentlemen Of The Road Stopover Festival comes to Aviemore today and tomorrow (July 31 and August 1) with Ben Howard, Honeyblood, White, Neon Waltz, Primal Scream, Rachel Sermani, The Macabees and headliners Mumford and Sons amongst the artists performing. Weekend tickets are £109 with weekend camping for £129 and kids under five can go for free.

Next weekend, it's the turn of Belladrum's Tartan Heart Festival (August 6 to 8 August) where you catch lots of fantastic up and coming artists like Catholic Action, Hector Bizerk, Prides, Kloe, The LaFontaines, Fatherson and Honeyblood alongside The Kaiser Chiefs, Manic Street Preachers, The Proclaimers and Martha Reeves And The Vandellas. If you're heading to the festival be sure to check out my Belladrum Playlist on Spotify to get you in the mood.

Next week, Magners' Summer Nights (I wonder if they'd have called it something different if they knew it was going to be the worst summer EVER) kicks off at Kelvingrove Bandstand in Glasgow's west end. Now before I rave about this next gig I have to declare that my other half is in the band so I'm a wee bit biased. That being said I couldn't be more excited to see Glasvegas on Saturday, August 8. Carl Barat of The Libertines is supporting with his band The Jackals along with Glasgow duo Atom Tree. Glasvegas have been busy making their new album and haven't played in Glasgow since Christmas so they're buzzing for their Kelvingrove gig. There's nothing quite like the atmosphere when Glasvegas play to a home crowd so make sure to get tickets for this one, it's going to be special.

The following night The Electric Honey Sessions take over Kelvingrove bandstand for Magners' Summer Nights with We Were Promised Jetpacks, Fatherson, Woodenbox and my palls Young Aviators.
