Who are you?

Stacie Mackenzie, Owner of number659

What does your business do?

We are an innovative hair, nails and beauty salon situated in the West End of Glasgow.

We are a walk in style bar, colour bar and blow-dry bar offering cuts and colours in Glasgow’s most stylish salon.

We have been selected by Olaplex and L’Oreal as a preferred partner meaning that we benefit from on trend product and technique launches.

Our mezzanine nail bar is a one-off in Glasgow specialising in manicures, pedicures, nail art, acrylics and hand art.

The salon vibe is really distinct with its minimal understated interior and we think we’ve created a great place to relax, hang out with your friends chat about your new look or colour change or be transformed while having a coffee, a cocktail or even a full body massage in one of our reclining chairs.

Where are you based?

We are based at 659 Great Western Road, which is a great location in the heart of the West End, with excellent transport links.

How did you get started?

I previously started off in a small business unit in Glasgow working alongside Loreal keeping up with the fast paced industry trends. I then moved on to working in a busy city centre salon. Two years ago I took a break to have baby which gave me the drive a ambition to start number659.

What is your top tip?

My top tip is to have a solid team behind you who want to continuously learn and stay creative. Our industry is one generally built on trends and individuals however, at number659 we want to ensure that our salon is never one that follows a fad but stays ahead of the game in terms of style, quality, design and customer service.

Our staff agree with this approach and that ensures that everyone in the salon is always working together to reach the same goal.

We think this translates into the salon environment and is something that our customers always comment to us on.

What was your biggest mistake/or what would you do differently?

I’m not sure we have made a big mistake yet.

As a new business we have of course tried a few things that perhaps haven’t worked out as well as we would have hoped however, that has allowed us to learn and grow so that next time we will do it a different way with a better result.

Sometimes that's what helps your business grow and evolve.

How long has your business been running?

number659 opened its doors only 8 months ago and we hit the ground running.

Who was/is your mentor/or inspiration?

In a congested marketplace we knew that our salon had to stand out.

Not just in our aesthetic but also our quality, value, goals and service. We take our inspirations from brands that seek to do the same as us.

Locally, a good example of this would be Glasgow’s own Sara Hill and the launch of our own make-up range.

Our staff continue to train with L'Oreal Professional who we feel continue to provide the best industry wide education programme and day to day trend inspirations.

Where do you plan your business to be in five years time?

Throughout 2016 we have a few exciting projects lined up including a new offering in our nail bar that isn’t available elsewhere in Glasgow and a few pop ups with some of our favourite local partners and businesses. In the medium term, we aim to continue to increase awareness of our brand, further increase our staff numbers to cope with our ever growing demand and then expand within Glasgow with further salons.
