THE big TV news this week is that singer Will Young has sensationally quit Strictly Come Dancing for personal reasons. Now of course I'm sure everyone wishes Will well and I hope nothing too serious has happened to cause his departure but certain media outlets are now speculating that it’s got something to do with his little on air spat with head judge Len Goodman last weekend.

For those of you who missed it, mouthy contestant Will was effectively telt and skelped so to speak by Len when he tried to talk over the judge during his feedback.

This is nothing new for Will as he famously had more than a word or two with judge Simon Cowell during his time on Pop Idol which he of course went on to win in 2002 and quite rightly so. He was a brilliant contestant who I voted for and has since gone on to have a fantastically successful solo career.

Sadly that's where the compliments from me to Will stop as I had the terrible misfortune to meet him once or twice immediately after I’d won the second series of Pop Idol. As you can imagine, I was in utter awe of the man. He’d already won the show and had a string of hits. Let's face it, he was the only other person I knew or had met at that time who could possibly understand exactly what this wee 23-year-old girl from Baillieston was going through.

I’ll give you some idea of what it was like, I was living in London completely on my own and when I tried to venture outside and leave the house there were paparazzi directly outside trying to get the most recent snap of the new talent show winner. Every other day I was reading a different nonsensical story about myself in the papers and no one really understood what I was going through at that time. As you can imagine the idea of meeting Will was just so exciting as he might actually have been able to offer some advice to me.

The first time I saw him in the flesh was at an event we were both attending. I tried to say a polite hello and he just completely ignored me, I mean totally looked through me and walked away when I tried to speak to him. I thought ok, maybe he doesn't know who I am as we’d never met before? I mean just because he'd won the last series of Pop Idol didn't necessarily mean he’d seen any of the new series.

The next time I met him I asked the assistant assigned to me from my management company, which incidentally was the same management company Will was signed to at that time, to introduce us. She did but once again he did the exact same thing. He simply just stared, said nothing and then just walked away from me. I remember how utterly shattering that was for me. I’d voted for him as many times as I could afford to during his final in 2002 and foolishly, I really felt he was someone that could just pat me on the back and tell me it would all be ok.

That was my personal experience with Will although weirdly it never stopped me buying his music. He's a brilliant artist who has released some really great songs. Whatever his reasons for leaving, we must respect them as we simply don't have the facts. It's that old saying, the show must go on, and it will.

With characters like Ed Balls and Judge Rinder still in the competition and delighting the masses with their outlandish performances, viewing figures will still be in their millions next week that's for sure. With the likes of those two in the competition maybe it wasn't a case of I think I'd better leave right now for Will (I know I terrible use of his hit song title but if you thought that was bad here comes another one) but a bit more like jealousy.

I'm very excited to be once again hosting this years T for Tommy ladies lunch at Celtic Park this Sunday. It's such a fantastic afternoon with high tea, bubbles, dancing and singing while raising much needed funds for the Tommy Burns Skin Cancer Trust. See you all there girls.
