Friday January 20 2017 is a date history will never forget. It's one of those “Where were you?” dates that people will talk about for years to come. I'm sure even then, they will still be in the same utter disbelief that a majority of the world's population find themselves in today.

Some people still believe it won't actually happen even as the clock is ticking down with just hours to go but believe me people, this isn't a drill. Today at 4pm GMT Donald J Trump will become the 45th President of the United States of America.

As democracy dictates the people have spoken and voted, but I still find myself asking the question how did this happen? How did it get to this point that some people in America thought this man was the best person to lead their country?

Granted I don't live in the USA and therefore I of course don't see first hand the deprivation, the lack of employment and clearly the hatred towards the establishment, but still what is it about this man that gives some of the American people hope and belief that he has the capabilities to lead and change all of this during his time in office?

Looking back as his presidential campaign it's nothing short of a horror show, from encouraging supporters to fight at rallies to talking of banning Muslims from entering the country while creating a Muslim registry.

He wants to build a wall around Mexico and make them pay for it and he publicly mocked a disabled reporter in front of thousands of people and was cheered for it. On top of all that, which by the way doesn't even scratch the surface, he was also exposed, on camera, for saying some seriously degrading things about women and what he was allowed to do to them because he was rich and famous but surely the worst thing of all is that he calls Nigel Farage a close personal friend who he admires politically. Need I say anymore?

Despite all of that the people of America went to the polls, cast their votes and Mr Trump won. It does however speak volumes that no one, and I mean no one, has agreed to perform at his inauguration ceremony today with the few unknown previously confirmed acts dropping out like flies all week as the penny finally drops that appearing would be career suicide.

Compare that to President Obama’s inaugurations where the A list stars were queuing up to perform from Beyoncé to Kelly Clarkson and Aretha Franklin to name but a few and it shows a real gulf between the two in terms of popularity.

Today will of course come and go and even if it's only his close personal pal Nigel Farage belting out Chris Rea's Road To Hell on the karaoke for entertainment, I suppose that's not what we should be focusing on.

It's what happens tomorrow, the day after and every day after that for the next four years that really matters. Let's hope the new president stops writing everything in capital letters, stops using the hashtag Fakenew and in fact shuts down his twitter account altogether.

Let's also hope he stops obsessing with Alec Baldwin's hilarious portrayal of him on Saturday Night Live and starts focusing on bringing a very broken country together while taking his role as commander and chief of the United States of America seriously and conducting himself in a professional manner on a very public stage.

Only time will tell and I truly hope the people will not live to regret their decision. There's a saying we hear all the time but it surely has never meant more at this time and going forward. May God truly bless America because the world's thoughts and prayers are with you all.
