I HAVE a confession to make.

It’s hard to believe since I have such a sweet tooth...but I think I may be the only person in the world not to love a Krispy Kreme doughnut.

Yes, I know there’s a huge hype around the dinky take-out boxes and I know the lengths - and miles - people go just to buy a dozen or a double dozen decorated doughnuts.

But they just don’t do it for me.

We reported this week that a second branch of Krispy Kreme could open in the Glasgow area, after a planning application was submitted for an outlet in Silverburn.

The American firm has already been given the green light to open at Braehead.

I had my first (and possibly last) taste of a Krispy Kreme a few years ago when a colleague brought a box back from a far-flung location.

I picked up the glossy, glazed sweet treat, took a bite and I thought: “Is that it?”

I'd heard such exotic tales about Krispy Kremes - that they were a delicacy that couldn’t be beaten. Seriously?

It was just a bog standard doughnut. It wasn’t bad but it was far from delicious.

It was definitely worse than the warm sugar doughrings my auntie used to buy me from the baker in the summer holidays.

I think I’m well qualified to cover the issue of delicacies since my favourite thing is eating them.

The other week there was a story about the deep fried Mars bar.

I laughed when I read that the Carron Fish Bar in Stonehaven was being ordered by Aberdeenshire council to remove their banner about being the birthplace of the battered bar on health grounds.

A ridiculous action - I bet it’s a heart-stopping experience tourists will never forget.

I still remember making a pilgrimage to the Carron when I was about 10 to satisfy my curiosity.

My verdict? The battered Mars bar was amazing but a bit sickly. I still finished it, obviously, and I lived to tell the tale.

I discovered recently it’s closer to home, too.

The takeaway L’Aquila on Dundas Street sells them - and the owner told me the deep fried Mars bar was “very popular”.

A few weeks ago there was an outcry about the demise of Greggs’ macaroni pie.

Now the mac pie is my most favourite delicacy - it's probably the subject I Tweet about most.

It’s rare that I’m not up for unhealthy treats.

So tell me: what’s so good about Krispy Kremes? I want to be converted.
