Who are you?

I am Rhona Jane Ferguson, owner of Isle of Rhona.

What does your business do?

We create handmade tartan lingerie and wedding garters. We also offer a bespoke service where brides can request specific tartans and styles.

Where are you based?

The east end of Glasgow.

How did you get started?

During my time as a bra fitter in a department store I soon learned what customers were looking for and what appealed to different people. A friend was getting married and found it difficult to find a tartan garter so I made one for her. Then more friends asked which led to me setting up an Etsy account and selling my garters across the country. I then secured Wear Eponymous as stockists as well as selling online on our website.

What is our background?

I studied at the Heriot Watt Textile School achieving a degree in Fashion and Textile Innovations and New Applications. I focused on my love of lingerie and its use within advertising and after I graduated I got jobs in the lingerie departments of Debenhams then House of Fraser.

What is your top business tip?

Be passionate. There is no point dedicating your time and energy to something you feel little or no passion for. Keep on top of your receipts and seek advice from Business Gateway Glasgow who will be able to assess your idea and guide you in the right direction.

How long has your business been running?

Although I’ve had the idea in my head for years, I only launched Isle of Rhona within the last year.

Has anyone helped you get started?

Talking over my idea with Business Gateway’s expert advisers is what really kick started my plans. There is a big jump between making items for family and friends to actually selling products so having the support of my Business Gateway adviser was a boost.

What was your first deal?

Although I started with an Etsy account, things really took off when I was picked to be part of Wear Eponymous’ pop up shop earlier this year.

What was your biggest mistake/or what would you do differently? It would have to be not starting sooner. I kept putting things off as I was afraid but in hindsight, there was little to be afraid of. My customers have been very supportive, they love the products and we attract new customers each day.

Who is your mentor/inspirations?

It has to be my gran Jane (Jean) Hardie. She taught me to sew when I was young and showed me that patience was key. I also owe a lot to my mum Fiona and my Business Gateway adviser Mark Houston who has helped me focus on my goals.

Where do you plan your business to be in five years’ time? I aim to have my products in many more stockists, both online and in store. I hope to be featured regularly in wedding publications and be the first port of call for brides seeking wedding garters. I also want to expand the range and eventually open my own shop.
