So this is my last column of 2016 and I can't believe another year has flown by so quickly. It's been a funny old year to be fair with highs and lows a plenty starting back in January when we lost one of the world's most talented musicians and performers, David Bowie.

People across the globe were left in utter shock and devastation but sadly many, many more talented individuals would follow with the loss of actors Alan Rickman, Gene Wilder and Frank Kelly.

We then lost Prince, Victoria Wood and Caroline Aherne and Muhammad Ali to name but a few so 2016 has been a right old stinker in that respect. We had the shock split of Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, head judge Len Goodman bowed out of Strictly Come Dancing and the world was introduced to X Factor contestant Honey G, but the less said about that the better.

Politically 2016 was huge as the UK decided to say ta-ta to Europe with Brexit. Coincidentally all the people who had led the Brexit campaign did a bunk and said ta-ta to all of us which was nice of them and the unthinkable actually happened.

Donald Trump only went and won the presidential race and will, unbelievably, become the next president of the United States of America in January 2017.

To think that man will be given full access to the country's nuclear codes sends shivers up my spine - considering he's been on this planet a whole 70 years and still hasn't mastered the art of using the humble hair brush. Fingers crossed the role of commander and chief of the US goes a bit better for him.

On a personal note, 2016 has been possibly one of the best years of my life. At 36-years-old my soulmate asked me to be his wife and my heart nearly burst with happiness.

My baby sister Kerry moved to New York to work with one of the world's top artists and my sister Laura gave birth to another beautiful baby bringing so much love and joy to our family with the arrival of little Cara.

My career has once again been overwhelming with the opportunities I've been blessed with from working at Radio Scotland, to performing alongside Susan Boyle with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, to starring in the Paddy Power advert beamed out to millions across the globe during the Champions League final in May. I also sold out my entire run at this year's Edinburgh Festival with my third one woman show Pop Goes the Idol and followed it up with my sell out Christmas show last week at the Old Fruitmarket.

Tomorrow night I'll be hosting my final Music Match show of 2016 on BBC Radio Scotland from 10pm. It's going to be a Christmas cracker I promise so if you're having a night in wrapping presents, having a party or even if you're working make sure you tune in for all of the festive fun. I've bought enough tinsel to cover a football pitch for the studio so I'll be posting pictures online too.

I will most certainly look back on 2016 so fondly and remember how lucky I am to have such an amazing family around me and to continue to have so much support from the people of Scotland without whom I simply wouldn't have a career. Thank you for everything you've done and for making it possible for me to do a job I adore.

Thank you also for reading my column week after week and listening to my opinions and stories from the sublime to the ridiculous. I love having a gab with you all here.

I hope you've had a wonderful year and if not new beginnings are just around the corner with 2017 fast approaching. I’ll be back with the column on Friday January 13 but before I go I want to wish each and everyone of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year.

Much love, Michelle xx
