Baking - unlike my dad's suit - is back in fashion...

THIS week my lovely parents John and Helen celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary.

With five daughters, a grandchild on the way and all of their own teeth - well, almost - I'd say that's not bad going in this day and age.

We did however roar with laughter when looking back at some of their wedding snaps, especially at my dad's little brown velvet number with matching bow tie and giant handlebar moustache.

How could that look ever have been fashionable? But according to old papa McManus it absolutely was.

I suppose that's what happens though, fashions come and go, trends change all the time and what was once the 'it' thing is now dated and completely embarrassing.

For example, bumbags covered in badges and I Love Jason Donovan T-shirts. Sadly many, many pictures from my childhood show me modelling both.

One thing that has recently come back into fashion, and is now almost considered even sexy, is baking.

Thanks to shows such as The Great British Bake Off, Lorraine Pascale's Baking Made Easy and the queen of sexy cooking herself Nigella Lawson back on the scene, the wonderful world of baking is most definitely the place to be right now.

That's why I was absolutely delighted to be invited along to the 2013 Scottish Baker of the Year premises in Dunfermline yesterday to launch the search for this year's winner alongside football legend and current Provost of Fife, Jim Leishman.

Stephens Bakery has been a family run business for more than 140 years and when I met with owners Andre and Rona Sarafilovic it was clear to see that this isn't just a job - it's a passion.

Here I was listening to how everything on the premises was made fresh that morning and out for delivery by 5 am.

All ingredients were locally sourced and secret recipes passed down from generation to generation were kept under lock and key...and don't even get me started on the smell.

If you ever wondered what heaven actually smelled like, I think I have found it.

To promote this year's Scottish Baker of the Year Awards, Jim and I took part in a Generation Style game which involved hand decorating a cake and making a mince bridie.

Somehow I managed to win the little competition, although Mary Berry and the likes have nothing to fear just yet.
