This week: a lunch date with Bill, a millinery masterclass and a belter of a party for Christian MacLeod.

Lunch @ Bills

I think Bill's is meant to be a bit like Dave. Not the bloke, the TV channel; so called because everyone knows someone called Dave. Well, Bill's - not the bloke, the new restaurant in the centre of town - is like that, endearingly familiar.

Bill's isn't a made up concept, though. It started out as a wee greengrocer in Sussex run by a chap called Bill (funnily enough!) He sourced and supported locally grown produce and products, homespun cakes and created their 'legendary' fish-finger sandwich. Before long, the hungry hoards, the foody fanatics and the business folks in their money-making suits came. Everyone bought in to it and soon, Bill's 'The Chain' was born. There are now around fifty Bill's Cafes down south, but the one on West Nile Street, is their first billing in Scotland.

It's a mid-market happy families kind of place, a Jamie's Italian, a Zizzi's or a Cafe Rouge. It is slick and well managed and I suspect the food is always the same. Good. Great in fact, where some dishes were concerned. My friend ordered the Cauliflower Soup and some delicious wee fish cakes, perhaps not the stuff of their 'legendary' sandwich but a treat all the same. I had the Avocado, Bacon and Spinach Salad (not so vegan this week, but trying!), it was a hearty bowl of good greens with a sharply pleasant bite of their house dressing.

I mentioned the friendly staff but our lovely waiter Bogdan went above and beyond, giving us a helping of the giggles on the side. And, when Bill's bill came, we were pleasantly surprised. Bill's might have lost the artisan edge of the original greengrocers but sometimes knowing and getting exactly what you expect can be just as comforting as truly homemade.

Millinery Masterclass @ Blythswood Square

If there's a man to go and see about a hat, it's Stephen Jones. He's one of the country's best milliners and has made head-toppers for women as wildly different as Dita Von Teese and Princess Diana. His headgear is up there with the very best and (of course) the most expensive, however, like other top designers he has thankfully brought his unique designs to the masses through Debenhams.

This week, he was up in Glasgow to launch his new collection for them, SS15 Top Hat, and I was invited along to Blythswood Square for afternoon tea and a masterclass in how to wear a hat; apart from just on your head (obvs)!

So, what are Stephen's top hat tips? Get one to suit your face, not your clothes. Size doesn't matter (what?) when it comes to your head, only the size of your hat: where bigger is always better. Try hats on and always check the back, hand mirrors are handy. And finally, according to Stephen, just always wear one! If you do, you will be moved to the front of the queue, get away with mischief and always, always be served first. I'm thinking I might need to wear one for the birth… well, if the hat fits!

Stephen's Top Hat collection is currently available in store at Debenhams, there are around 38 pieces and prices start from £30.

Christian MacLeod @ The Corinthian

It's been a fashionable week here in the city, last night saw the launch of Scottish designer Christian MacLeod's new belt collection at The Corinthian. It was time to squeeze the glad-rags on over the bump!

A few years ago, Christian MacLeod was more accustomed to belting a 9-iron round a course, having started out his career as a professional golfer. Then in 2013, he decided to change direction and tee-up his first fashion collection under his self-named 'CM' label. He chose to focus on belts, as apparently when you finish your golf swing, that's the thing that's always on show! Having a shoe in with the pro's meant he quickly had Open Champion Paul Lawrie sporting his belts in both The Masters and The US Open.

Last year, Christian was nominated for the Scottish Fashion Awards Accessory Designer of the Year and decided to move from Inverness to Glasgow and capitalise on his success. Having lived here for a wee while now, he's been impressed with not just how fashionable Weegies are, but how good our parties are, so when he was planning this launch he wanted to make it a big one and managed to get GQ, BMW and Cruise on board.

And, it was a belter of a party and the belts - the reason we were all there - are pretty smart too!

Wee Bird Recommends

Wee Bird is a spring chicken (honest!) so is excited about all the Easter goings on this weekend. Turn Eggsplorer at National Trust properties (like Pollock House) and find some of the chocolate eggs hidden at them - We're in! To burn them off, why not go to Bikram Yoga Southside, where wearing a pair of bunny ears will get you in for free all weekend. Then on Sunday it's the Yorkhill Easter Egg Run - a Glasgow yoke for over 30 years - motorbikes, trikes and scooters ride in convoy around the city in aid of the Yorkhill Children's Charity, kicking off from the SECC at 11am.
