This week, no serious boobs at the MTV EMAs, Blood Brothers and dressing-up for charity.

MTV European Music Awards @The Hydro

Surprise boobs, suspicious cigarettes, stage storming and a whole lot of Miley Cyrus; the MTV EMA's are widely considered the daft, off-the-rails teenager of awards shows, along with their older sister, the VMAs. On Sunday, Glasgow hosted the gig for the first time in it's 20 year bender and, with Nicki Minaj as the host, most folk thought the show was going to be one perfectly round rump away from serious beef!

However, the Glasgow EMA's were notable, perhaps, for their lack of controversy. It was a slick show; classy and well managed. A huge bust for the city, Minaj and MTV. There were flawless performances from Ariana Grande, Kiesza, a set from Royal Blood, U2, a balletic ballad from Ed Sheeran and a legendary mash-up of Biffy Clyro and Slash to honour Global Icon winner Ozzy Osborne.

Even Nicki's rendendition of 500 Miles, her reckoning that she was Her Minaj-esty Queen of Scots and my losing a shoe - but that's a story for another time - didn't put a dampener on things. It was a great night, one watched by billions of folk around the globe and it certainly shone a spotlight on Glasgow (and One Direction). The only thing is, I think I might be a wee bit disappointed that there weren't any real shenanigans on stage. Have the MTV EMA's finally grown up?

Blood Brothers @ The Kings

I always say that I'm 'not really a musical person' and then end up on my feet, singing and dancing in the aisles. On this occasion, however, I did not. Partly because Blood Brothers isn't that kind of show. It's a dark tale about twin boys separated at birth, one whisked away - illegally - to live a life of luxury whilst the other remains in poverty with his Mam (played by the brilliant Maureen Nolan). The two lads later meet by chance as youngsters in Liverpool and it sets in motion the ill-fated story with a particularly unhappy-clappy ending.

It's not an easy feat for grown blokes to play young boys and it could easily have ended up a bit of a pantomime (the Krankies spring to mind), but the twins were brilliantly portrayed (with some comic relief) by Sean Jones and Joel Benedict. The cast is stellar and there were some incredible performances. Apart from, perhaps, Marti Pellow… erm, just waiting for someone to throw an egg at me!

I'm sorry, I love Marti in Wet Wet Wet, he's very handsome and his voice is top note perfect. However, his acting was a wee bit hammy and his accent aims for Scouser and ends up nearer to Clydebank. It was close, but - for me, at least - love was not all around at Blood Brothers, but then, it's not really that kind of show.

Killer Heels and Cocktails @ Grand Central

There are a few things Glasgow ladies do very well: wearing the highest of heels, enjoying a wee swallie and, I think, having hearts made of gold when it comes to fundraising for a good cause. Last Friday, on the same day that Davina McColl hosted Dine with Davina in Southampton, I hosted the, appropriately named, Killer Heels and Cocktails, in Glasgow for Action Medical Research. Action is a quiet but important charity, which funds research into finding cures and treating disease in our wee yins, from the moment they're conceived, through birth and as they grow.

The Glasgow glamoratti were out in force and, as I said to the ladies, one thing you definitely notice when you host an entirely female event is how much better it smells! There was also a lot more dancing! An enthusiastically sweaty performance from the Soul Kings rounded the day off, as well as the fact we managed to raise more than a 'wedge' for the charity. Girl Power!

Breast Cancer Care Fashion Show @ The Radisson

The MTV EMAs were less bold than expected but bravery was not in short supply at the Breast Cancer Care Fashion Show at the Radisson Blu. The Show is an incredibly inspiring and uplifting event where folk who either currently have or have battled breast cancer, show their strength and beauty by putting on a catwalk show.

The night began with a personal tribute from Darius, who asked his Mum (who was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago) and Dad to come up on stage as he sang Sinatra and they danced. It as a touching start to the evening. After dinner and a good wee bit of fundraising, it was time for the catwalk show. The 22 models - who have all suffered the heartache of breast cancer - took to the stage to strut their stuff. The idea of The Show is to raise awareness for the disease and the charity, but it's also to show that there is life after diagnosis. It's a celebration, but an incredibly poignant one: there were meant to have been 23 models taking part.

Wee Bird Recommends

Wee Bird is like a partridge in a pear tree when it comes to Christmas, so Wee are delighted that the annual Christmas Market is set to arrive back in the city today. It's in a slightly different spot this year, because of the works at St Enoch station, so you can now find all the stocking fillers and Christmas cheer you could hope for on Argyll Street.
