This week on a roll with Danny MacAskill, gala concert tees up Ryder Cup and a classical direction for Scottish boy band, Scozzesi.

Drop and Roll Tour

I took my cycling proficiency test four times. I wasn't wheely rubbish (that pun is!), but the course was cheap and cheerful childcare for my parents during the school holidays. And, what's more, I really loved cycling. Well, more than tennis anyway, and that was the alternative.

Probably the most proficient cyclist in the world is Danny MacAskill. The street trials biker - who now lives in Glasgow - became a global sensation in 2009 when he released a YouTube film of his fear-defying tricks. Since then, his videos, most filmed in and around Scotland's iconic sights, including our Finnieston Crane, have had over 100 million online hits.

On Sunday, he took his tricks from the streets and into the Velodrome and I was there to host the show. The day kick-pedalled off with thousands of Glaswegians taking part in the Fresh n' Lo Pedal for Scotland Glasgow Family Bike Ride. Then it was into the Emirates for the dizzying heights of Danny and pal's Drop and Roll Tour.

If the audience thought they were in for a nice relaxing afternoon, however, they were seriously mistaken. From backflipping off swiss balls to bunny hops over a limbo bar, taller than me, it was edge of your saddle stuff. Danny and teammates, Duncan Shaw and Ali C, are absolute inspirations for both the brave and the Scaredy Cats (me!) amongst us.

Afterwards, I was really sad to hear that Danny had his bike nicked in the city. Danny without his bike is a wee bit like the Duke of Wellington without his cone. Practically naked. So come on Glasgow, get your Taggart face on and let's work out this whodunnit… so Danny can get back on his bike and continue to wow us with his wheel skills.

Ryder Cup Concert

At first glance, the line-up for the Ryder Cup Gala Concert was eclectic, to say the least. From Twin Atlantic to Midge Ure via Scottish Ballet, I wasn't quite sure whether it was on course to be a birdie or a bogey. Nor, exactly who the audience was going to be… but judging from the number of suits (Midge Ure's included) it was certainly more grown up than the last concert I rocked out at in the Hydro.

The night was a little bit subdued at the start, despite great sets from Nina Nesbit, Eddi Reader and CEOG favourite Twin Atlantic, perhaps because half the audience (distinguished guests and golfers) were off having their tea! The second half followed, and the mood turned jubilant once we had welcomed Team Europe and USA on stage.

Afterwards - heading into the back nine - performances from Amy MacDonald, Texas, Scottish Ballet and a sensational blast of Vienna from Midge Ure (or, wee Jim from Cambuslang!) went a fair way to make the night a surprisingly perfect (if random) celebration of Scottish talent. It was also a lovely way to tee up the next few days at Gleneagles… a nice wee bit of four play, if you will!

Scozzesi

'Eh Scozzesi?' I thought when I received an invite to go and see the new Scottish boy band Scozzesi. One Direction, these lads aint, however. They're a new classical group, which includes two pianists and eight handsome, barri-toned young chaps. The name comes from the Italian word for Scottish men. Clearly much more refined that the local equivalent, which might be bams or something!

I was asked to go to their debut gig in The Winter Gardens, Glasgow Green last night. A beautiful venue for a gig, even though the acoustics sometimes fall a bit flat. Scozzesi are absolutely brand new, and the event was actually one of their very first performances together as a group. Their significant repertoire, however, includes classical songs, Scottish ditties and a few pop classics you could - if vocally inclined - certainly sing along to. Che bello!

Wee Bird Recommends

Today and tomorrow, Macmillan Cancer Support hosts the World's Biggest Coffee Morning. Apparently, you are never more than half a mile away from an event! So, Wee would like to recommend finding your nearest one, heading along and having your cake and eating it - by having some of the sweet stuff and giving to charity!
