1 Istanbul:
The ancient Turkish city was formerly Constantinople and, before that, Byzantium.
2 Mumbai: One of several Indian cities to change name, it was formerly Bombay.
3 St Petersburg: It became Petrograd then Leningrad, after the Soviet leader, before reverting to its original name.
4 Ho Chi Minh City: It was the Vietnamese city of Saigon until 1976, when it was renamed after the Communist leader.
5 New York: Known as Manna-hata to the Algonquin tribe, the first European arrivals, the Dutch, named it New Amsterdam. It was renamed again by the British.
6 Oslo: King Christian renamed the Norwegian capital Christiana. It was renamed Oslo in 1925.
7 Jakarta: The capital of Indonesia was for centuries known as Batavia.
8 Tel Aviv: The city, in Israel, founded in 1909, was originally called Ahuzat Bayit.
9 Ottawa: The Canadian capital was originally called Bytown after its founder, British soldier John By.
10 Ankara: The Turkish capital was formerly Angora, like the goat.
