Here's the latest in our new series of blogs by Glasgow students.

Kierran Allardice is a journalism student at Glasgow Caledonian University. He has a love for sport and passion for statistics.

GCWho? is a common phrase used by students, primarily of Strathclyde and Glasgow Universities, when speaking of Glasgow Caledonian University.

That's the general feeling within Glasgow when it comes to the various universities. If we were to go by stereotypes it would be: Glasgow University - for the posher folk, those with more intellectual ability Strathclyde University - engineers, engineers everywhere Glasgow Caledonian University - not as good as the others but better than University of West of Scotland Well isn't that just great, aside from UWS we're bottom of the pile.

It was a picture from a friend that got me thinking of Caley's reputation and how it compares to the other unis in Glasgow.

The photo was of a post from an app called Yik Yak - the simplest explanation is an app where people post things anonymously and can see other posts from a 1.5mile radius - where some of the more popular posts tend to be those directed at or degrading GCU.

The post read, "The male chimp has learned to sign basic nouns to his handler. Now he walks proudly to Caley to pick up his journalism degree."

Firstly, I do journalism at Caley so obviously took a little offence at this.

Secondly, while I may look somewhat closer to a chimp than a human than most people do this does not mean that all of us at GCU look/have the intellect similar to that of a chimp.

And last of all, the journalism course is one of Caley's most prestigious courses and happens to be the best in the country!

So there, have that probable Strathclyde/Glasgow student. That's not the only Yik Yak post about Caley I've seen.

"Glasgow Caledonian 'University'" was another popular post. Now the university may have been formed from the amalgamation of two colleges but it certainly is a university and even ranks 2nd in the UK for employability among graduates.

No disrespect to the fashion students who study at Caley but I do get the feeling that it's that aspect of the university that tends to stick out like a sore thumb amongst other students in the city.

People see you can do a fashion course and instantly think 'Fashion? What kind of uni does that?'. No matter what others say, if it wasn't for studying at GCU I wouldn't have written this piece and you wouldn't be reading it so I for one am grateful I chose GCU over others.

We may not have the old buildings and history like Glasgow Uni or the 'standard' course choices like Strathclyde has but means nothing. Caley is a unique and modern university. I'm a GCU student and I'm proud of it.
