We are Smudge Digital, a new digital studio based in Glasgow specialising in visual effects and post production for animation, film and television.
We also provide animations and pre-visualisations for advertisement and promotional visual content.
Smudge Digital is made up of animation graduates, Nicole Anderson and Lauren Kerr.
What does your business do?
Our main focus is visual effects, which is the art of bringing 3D virtual objects seamlessly into reality and vice versa.
In terms of post-production what we do is clean up, so if items need removed from a scene we can do that after filming, to save on reshoot costs.
WHERE ARE YOU BASED? In the Digital Enterprise Glasgow (DEG) office in The Hub, at Pacific Quay.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
It was on a night out when we formulated the idea to start Smudge.
Everyone we have spoken to has been excited about what we do.
WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?
We both graduated last year from the University of West of Scotland.
Lauren graduated with honours in Computer Animation with Digital Art and Nicole graduated with honours in Computer Animation.
After university we both did an internship at Tern TV with the story mechanics, modelling, texturing and lighting game environments.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP TIP?
Speak to Business Gateway when you start. They will send you on courses, let you know about different support out there and help keep you focused.
HOW LONG HAS YOUR BUSINESS BEEN RUNNING?
HAS ANYONE HELPED YOU GET STARTED AND HOW?
Business Gateway, and DEG gave us office space, and pushed us to achieve.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DEAL?
Our first job was for Search Consultancy. We created a short stop motion presentation for them.
WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST MISTAKE/OR WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY?
Fingers crossed, we have not made huge mistakes, we have had too much support, so no regrets.
WHO WAS/IS YOUR MENTOR/OR INSPIRATION?
John Lasseter, one of the three founding fathers of Pixar Animation Studios.
He believed that 3D animation using computers was possible and drove to get this dream to be a reality.
WHERE DO YOU PLAN YOUR BUSINESS TO BE IN FIVE YEARS' TIME?
We plan to be Scotland's leading freelance visual effects and post production studio, with at least 10 employees. We want to collaborate with other creative studios in Scotland to develop visual content to impress the world.
