4 Naples: One of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, it is a port on the Gulf of Naples.
5 Venice: Famed for its canals and gondoliers, the city sits on 118 small islands.
6 Genoa: The capital of Liguria and birth- place of Christopher Columbus and Niccolo Paganini.
7 Turin: The Piedmont capital is home to the Shroud of Turin, Juventus football club and until recently the Fiat motor company.
8 Palermo: The capital of the island of Sicily, it is an important centre of industry and culture.
9 Bologna: Home to the world's oldest university and the place that gave the world Bolognese sauce.
10 Verona: Setting for the Shakespeare plays Romeo and Juliet and The Two Gentlemen of Verona.
