1 Paisley:
A former monastery, this impressive building is now used by the Church of Scotland.
2 Dunfermline: Originally a priory, it was founded by Queen Margaret in the 11th Century.
3 Melrose: Robert the Bruce's heart is reputed to be buried in this Borders ruin.
4 Jedburgh: Another Borders abbey, it was once used for the coronations of Scottish monarchs.
5 Arbroath: Famous as the place where the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath was drafted.
6 Sweetheart: Dumfriesshire abbey named because the widow of John Balliol, King of Scots, carried his embalmed heart with her till she died.
7 Dryburgh: On the banks of the River Tweed, Sir Walter Scott is buried there.
8 Inchmahome Priory: Mary Queen of Scots was sheltered in this priory on an island in the Lake of Menteith.
9 Kilwinning: A Benedictine Abbey founded in 1140 and which flourished for 400 years.
10 Iona: St Columba brought Christianity to Scotland after establishing a community there.
