The most likely explanation for Clyde's nickname is they were a wee team playing to a high, or bully standard.

THE PARS: Early Dunfermline players were said to get 'paralytic' at the bar, hence the Pars.

THE STAGGIES: Ross County's badge is a stag's head, taken from the badge of the Seaforth Highlanders.

THE SONS: Short for Sons of the Rock, it is the nickname of Dumbarton.

THE BLUE BRAZIL: Cowdenbeath adopted the ironic nickname during a poor run of form in the 1990s.

THE HONEST MEN: A line from the Burns poem Tam O'Shanter gives Ayr United its nickname.

THE RED LICHTIES: Taken from the red light used to guide fishing boats to harbour at Arbroath.

THE STEELMEN: Motherwell's name comes from the steelworks that used to dominate the town.

THE GABLE ENDIES: Wealthy merchants in Montrose built houses in Dutch gable style.

THE BAIRNS: An old town motto read "Better meddle wi the deil than the Bairns o Falkirk".
