I came to university as Sport Billy and I guess now I'm just…Billy. As it says in my bio above I have a love for sport, almost always have and for certain always will. But now my love for sport takes a different form - it is no longer from taking part but more the watching of and writing about where I really enjoy it these days. Throughout my years at both primary and high school I'd been part of a number of sports clubs both in and out of school; basketball, football, badminton and tennis just to name a few. Okay, in sixth year taking part in sports took a little bit more of a backseat but it was just that, I still went to clubs and took part just not as many and not as much as I had previously. But when it came round to setting off for university I had planned to get back to my much more active lifestyle and maybe re-ignite the nickname my dad used to give me, Sport Billy. But it wasn't to be. Apparently a summer of doing very little really hits you for six. The time for university came and one of the first things I did was venture to the trials for the football team(s). They had at least three teams so I was sure to make one of them right? Wrong. So wrong. After half an hour at the trials my tongue was practically falling out of my mouth and I certainly wasn't breathing out of the top end, that's for sure. After an hour, fainting seemed like the only option but luckily I didn't. As you can imagine I didn't get picked…for any of the teams. My motivation to take part in any sport for the uni or any other club came and went that night. I did try to get myself into playing badminton but my badminton racquet is still in the same case in the same spot it was a year ago, and that's back home. Nights that could have been spent at football training or badminton club are now spent at the cinema or in the pub. Sunday mornings that could have been spent playing a match are instead spent in bed … until about 4pm. I watch my flat-mates leave for their football only to come back and find me sitting in the same spot watching Netflix as I was when they left. So it began because I didn't get picked and now I'm just lazy. So yes my playing days are behind me, my boots are hung up but I'll just stick to the occasional kick about and watching and writing from the stands. I'm happy with that.
