British European Airways was a holiday pioneer before being taken over by British Airways in 1974.
2 BOAC: British Overseas Airways Corporation, also taken over by British Airways.
3 Britannia: Flew thousands of Thomson Holidays sunshine-goers, renamed Thomsonfly.
4 Dan-Air: One of the largest firms in the UK, it was acquired by British Airways in 1992.
5 Flyglobespan: Went bankrupt in 2009 after only seven years in existence.
6 Laker Airways: The first no-frills service famed for its Skytrain service, it went bust in 1982.
7 British Midland International: Major holiday flight operator, taken over by British Airways in 2012.
8 bmibaby: Another low-cost airline that launched in 2002 and was sold to British Airways, then shut down.
9 British Caledonian: Massive company formed in 1970 but eventually taken over by British Airways in 1987.
10 Brymon Airways: Named after founders Bill Bryce and Chris Amon, it lasted from 1972 until 2002.
