1 Simple Minds:

The Scots band, led by Jim Kerr, started off playing Glasgow pubs in the 1970s, but achieved the big breakthrough in the 80s. Don't You (Forget About Me) was their biggest hit in 1985.

2 Dire Straits: Led by Glasgow-born Mark Knopfler, they were one of the top bands of the decade. Their biggest selling album, Brothers In Arms, has sold over 30 million copies.

3 Altered Images: Led by lead singer Clare Grogan, who had earlier starred in Gregory's Girl, the band burst on the music scene with happy Birthday and I Could be Happy. They had six UK Top 40 hit singles and three Top 30 albums between 1981 and 1983.

4 Deacon Blue: Formed in Glasgow in 1985, their hits included Real Gone Kid and Dignity. The latter is still popular and was sung at the closing ceremony at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

5 Big Country: The boys from Fife achieved Top 10 singles success with Fields Of Fire (400 Miles) and Wonderland.

6 The Eurythmics: Scots singer Annie Lennox and her partner Dave Stewart enjoyed a massive decade, with their biggest hit being Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).

7 The Bluebells: The Scottish indie rock band's biggest success was Young At Heart, which got to No 8 in 1984. It was reissued in 1993 after being used in a TV ad and was No 1 for four weeks.

8 Phil Collins: The former Genesis band member found huge solo success on both sides of the Atlantic in the 80s.

9 The Police: Hits like Every Breath You Take made Sting's band one of the most popular of the 80s.

10 Duran Duran: One of the most successful bands of the 80s and part of the second British invasion of the US.
