3 John Laurie: The Dumfires-born actor played Private Frazer, famous for his "We're doomed" catchphrase.
4 Clive Dunn: The Grandad singer was only 48 when he started playing Lance-Corporal Jones.
5 Arnold Ridley: Private Godfrey. In real life he had fought in both wars.
6 Ian Lavender: Private Pike, the "stupid boy" of the platoon, complete with Aston Villa scarf.
7 James Beck: Private Walker, the Cockney spiv. He collapsed and died while opening a fete aged 44.
8 Bill Pertwee: ARP Warden Hodges. He was a distant cousin of Doctor Who actor Jon Pertwee.
9 Frank Williams: The Rev Timothy Farthing. In real life he was a lay member of the Church of England's General Synod.
10 Edward Sinclair: The argumentative church verger Maurice Yeatman.
