Won 28 major trophies, including two European Champions leagues and 13 league titles. The club also won 10 Community Shields in 27 years, making him the most successful boss in the club's history.
Sir Matt Busby: Another Scot, he was nearly killed in the 1958 Munich Air Disaster but rebuilt the team and led them to victory in the European Cup in 1968.
Davie Moyes: Brought up in Glasgow, he lasted only 10 months in the job before being sacked this week after poor results.
Ron Atkinson: Flamboyant boss who preceded Fergie and won two FA Cups.
Tommy Docherty: The Glaswegian was in charge for 4½ years and won the FA Cup in 1977, but was sacked a few weeks later over his love affair with the physiotherapist's wife. They later married.
Dave Sexton: In charge for four years but the only trophy won was a share of the Charity Shield.
Frank O'Farrell: The Irishman was sacked in 1972 after United were thrashed 5-0 by Crystal Palace.
Wilf McGuinness: Succeeded Matt Busby when he was only 31 and was sacked after 18 months. Apparently the stress of it all made him so ill, all his hair fell out.
Jimmy Murphy: Acted as caretaker manager after the Munich Air Disaster and was Busby's long-time assistant. He died in 1989, aged 81.
Ryan Giggs: Caretaker manager appointed this week. His first match in charge is on Saturday against Norwich City.
