1 South Sudan:
Formed in July 2011 when it broke away from the rest of Sudan.
2 Kosovo: It became a country in its own right in 2008. It was formerly part of Yugoslavia and the scene of bitter fighting.
3 Serbia: Also part of the former Yugoslavia, it gained independence in 2006.
4 Montenegro: It was paired with Serbia for a time after the break-up of Yugoslavia but also became independent in 2006.
5 Timor-Leste: Known as East Timor, it gained independence from Indonesia in 2002.
6 Eritrea: Became a country in its own right in 1993 when it gained independence from Ethiopia.
7 Czech Republic: Formerly Czechoslovakia, it became independent in 1993.
8 Slovakia: The other portion of Czechoslovakia also gained statehood in 1993.
9 Bosnia-Herzegovina: Also part of the former Yugoslavia, it's been independent since 1992.
10 Palau: Gained independence from the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands in 1994.
