HUNDREDS of people braved awful weather on Sunday to do something good.

They answered a call from a quiet, unassuming woman to descend on Queen's Park and run in memory of her daughter.

Despite the fact that the rain poured down and the wind blew, 350 brave souls decided they wanted to commemorate the life of Moira Jones.

Moira, she was the victim of killer Marek Harcar. Until that fateful night Moira had lived an ordinary life as a sales consultant, going about her business, and enjoying her family and friends.

Her mother Bea's determination to make sure that life is not forgotten is admirable.

And all the people who ran on Sunday were equally determined.

The run was in celebration of Moira's life. It was also designed to allow runners to enjoy a "wonderful park" and raise money for the Moira Fund charity.

On the day, Bea told the runners that she was overwhelmed by the numbers who had turned up to show their support.

I can remember the day when the news came through that there had been a murder in the park.

As well as shocking people, it made many of my friends wary of going out at night. We were all young and thought we were invincible but this brought us up short.

Places you thought were safe suddenly became slightly unnerving.

The short walk was replaced with a ride in a taxi and wandering off from friends became a definite no-no.

It was a shocking thing that happened and as the details of the attack were revealed at the court case, the horror intensified.

Up until that point I was aware of other horrific crimes which had been committed but they were all in the past - this was my present.

I know terrible crimes will continue to be committed but I hope the show of solidarity on Sunday does mean something.

I was watching Strictly at the weekend and was once again astonished by the weird antics of the TV-watching public.

I am starting to think I must be watching a different show, because how on earth has Scott Mills managed to survive?

He must surely be the worst dancer in the history of the show.

Not only does he have two left feet, he also appears to have had a rhythm bypass.

Even Judy Murray is improving, and weeks ago I was certain she would be back in the locker room.

I can only think that Scott's loyal Radio 1 listeners have loads of money and keep pressing the redial button.

Hopefully, sense will prevail this week and he will go the way of Tim Wonnacott.
