WHAT on earth has Renee Zellweger done to her face?

This was the question on every gossip columnists lips this week as the Hollywood A-Lister stepped out in public on Monday and was snapped on the red carpet looking almost completely unrecognisable.

Over the years Renee has often dramatically change her appearance for various film roles, Bridget Jones being the most notable with the star gaining at least 30lbs for each of the movies in order to create the loveable haphazard Bridget, who's always unlucky in love. And even when she does eventually bag the man of her dreams, she still seems to mess it up at every turn.

She is still however a role model and idol for a lot of single women out there, I mean ladies, let's be honest, we've all at some point stood in our living rooms on a Saturday night with Chaka Khan's song I'm Every Woman blasting out of the speakers holding a shot glass in our hands and exclaiming 'I choose Vodka' after another disastrous encounter with a man, right?

Okay just me then but still, even though the actress has yo-yo'd up and down the scales for her art, her facial features never really changed and it was always clear that a very petite Ms Zellweger under there somewhere just waiting to burst out wearing an American size two dress at the film's red carpet premiere.

This time though something just isn't right and she does indeed look like a completely different person, leading most people to speculate that she has had some serious work done to her face, although some excellent work it has to be said, as no-one can quite put their finger on exactly what has been altered.

Renee has hit back, saying: "I'm glad folks think I look different. I'm living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I'm thrilled that perhaps it shows.

"My friends say that I look peaceful and I'm healthy."

So could it be as simple as that? Could the actress simply be loving life at the moment and that peace and contentment are just beaming from her?

Is that what happiness in fact looks like?

Maybe it's a reflection on society today that when a Hollywood actress dares to look different we automatically jump on the plastic surgery bandwagon.

I mean, it's a tough business for women in the public eye, because they're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

If celebrities decide to grow old gracefully they are universally panned in the press for ageing badly and not taking care of themselves, which no doubt leads to very few job offers on the table, yet if they do decided to go under the knife in a bid to keep their youthful looks, they are scrutinised and criticised from all corners for being fake.

It's also been nearly five years since the star's last movie, so it's entirely possible she has simply just aged very well since we last saw her.

In any case, she still looks great and will always be adored by all Bridget Jones fans out there, because if old Bridge can find love with her Mr Darcy, then there's hope for us all.

Maybe I'll find love during this year's Pavilion Panto Treasure Island?

Oh no wait, I'm playing a pirate and the only men I can hope to meet will have one eye, a parrot on their shoulder and a wooden leg - no different from the guys that usually chat me up then.

Oh well, time to dust off that Chaka Khan album again.

I'M DELIGHTED to be hosting and performing at some wonderful events this weekend in Glasgow.

Tomorrow night I'm singing at both the Kilbryde Hospice and the Erskine Ball in the city centre.

The Erskine Ball has a First World War dress code to mark the 100-year anniversary of the start of the Great War, so I have my Downton Abbey Style dress at the ready and I'm singing a collection of songs from that period, which I'm very excited about.

Then on Saturday I am once again hosting and performing at the annual T for Tommy ladies lunch in memory of the late great Tommy Burns as we try to raise at much money as possible for the skin cancer foundation set up in his name. And then at night, I am delighted to be back hosting the fabulous Soundsational Concert at Motherwell Civic Centre with this year's special guest being the fabulous Edward Reid.

The choir led by the maestro himself Tommy Chambers is one of the best I've ever heard, so it's no surprise that this evening is once again a complete sell out.

Oh I do love a chockablock weekend.
