2 Japan: Suntory and Nikka are the best-known brands of the burgeoning Japanese industry.
3 United States: Bourbon and rye whiskies make up the majority of the production.
4 Canada: Canadian Club is the most famous brand of the successful industry.
5 Ireland: Irish whiskey, like Bushmills, is normally distilled three times.
6 Denmark: Within the last 14 years a number of distilleries have sprung up in the Nordic country.
7 India: Most whisky in India is molasses-based and there is huge consumption amongst the rising middle classes.
8 Sweden: Production started in 1955 and the country's distillers have won a number of whisky awards.
9 Australia: Sullivan's Cove is the best known blend in what is a fairly recent overseas market.
10 Germany: A relative newcomer on the scene, there are now more than 20 distilleries.
