SOMEONE on social media took time out yesterday to inform me that today is officially One Hit Wonder Day and as I was apparently in that elite gang she thought I should be made aware of this significant date.

I was about to fire back some witty retort when I stopped myself.

Maybe I was in fact a one hit wonder, and maybe that was OK?

I decided, however, to take a deep breath and do a little research into the proper meaning of the term before I went all cyberspace Lara Croft on this little walking talking calendar.

So, what exactly is a One Hit Wonder?

Well according to Wikipedia it's 'A group or singer that has only one hit record before returning to obscurity.'

I looked at my own music career. With three UK Top 20 singles, one of which was at No.1 for three weeks, two UK Top 3 albums, including the Pop Idol Christmas outing - and not to mention my humble songwriting credits including a co-write on both the song Safe on the lovely Horse McDonald's Coming Up For Air Album and the current official STV Appeal theme tune Take you There - I felt slightly relieved that I'd done enough to avoid that dreaded label.

It did however, get me thinking about the One Hit Wonders over the past few years, some of whom are still in my what now feels like antique CD collection.

In fact the very first single I ever bought as an 11-year-old girl was The One and Only by Chesney Hawkes, which is now widely regarded as his only hit - and let me tell you ladies and gentlemen, this was love.

So much so that it lead to one of the most traumatic experiences of my younger sister Lynsey's life.

She had just turned 10, and as part of her Christmas had received a giant poster of Michael Jackson cuddling into large black panther.

Santa had also delivered Jacko's brand new Dangerous album which Lynsey played in our bedroom on repeat morning, noon and night.

It's probably worth noting that around this time she also made the insane decision to cover our beautiful spotless white satin communion gloves which looked like they'd actually been made by the angels in heaven with sticky glue and glitter, but as my mother still hasn't quite recovered almost 23 years later, the less said about that the better. Sorry, mum!

After two weeks of her belting out Black Or White, I'd had enough, and in a bold move I hid her album and started blasting out Chesney's No.1 hit.

Well after only a few bars I heard the living room door fly open and like a bat out of hell Lynsey came tearing up the stairs. I grabbed the bunk bed ladders to make my escape up to the top bunk, but tripped over a shoe on the floor and fell straight into the giant panther poster, ripping it down the middle with the hooks at the top of the ladder.

I stood frozen, breathless and terrified waiting for my sister to come in to this scene of devastation.

Do you remember that Friends episode when Phoebe loses the Pac-Man game just at the last hurdle?

Her reaction was shown in slow motion with some very loud and dramatic opera music playing over the top?

Well picture that times 100 and that should give you a good idea of what happened next.

In time she did learn to forgive me, although it would be years before I ever got to touch that ghettoblaster in our room again.

Come to think of it, the Friends theme tune by American band The Rembrandts was absolutely their biggest hit, but something tells me they might have made a few pounds from that little number with the show still being rerun on numerous channels across the globes 10 years after it wrapped.

With success like that it looks like they - along with many other massively successful One Hit Wonders - might have the last laugh today. Kerching!

I'M delighted to announce that I'll be hosting and performing at The Jane Thomson Sparkle Ball on Saturday October 4 at the George Hotel, in Edinburgh.

All monies raised on the night will go straight to Breakthrough Scotland, a charity dedicated to people with Breast Cancer and with only a few tickets left it's set to be a fantastic evening.
