The world's biggest island, it has an area of 836,000 square miles and a population of only 56,000.

2 New Guinea: Lying in the Pacific Ocean, north of Australia, it comprises Papua New Guinea and part of Indonesia.

3 Borneo: Also containing part of Indonesia as well as Malaysia and Brunei.

4 Madagascar: A mountainous island located off the south-east coast of Africa.

5 Baffin Island: The largest island in Canada, named after the English explorer William Baffin.

6 Sumatra: Also in the South Pacific, it is the largest island entirely in Indonesia.

7 Honshu: The most populous island of Japan, it means 'Main Island' or 'Main Province'.

8 Victoria Island: Situated in the high Canadian Arctic, only 1800 people live there.

9 Great Britain: Containing England, Scotland and Wales, it is the largest island in Europe.

10 Ellesmere Island: Also in the Canadian Arctic, large portions of it are covered in glaciers and icecaps.
