FORGET all this talk of building a temporary stage at the Art Galleries for the West End Festival (Evening Times, June 6), let's renovate the existing Victorian bandstand in Kelvingrove Park and hold gigs.

It would be a lasting legacy which could be used throughout the year.

Granted it won't hold thousands of people but it would provide an excellent venue for smaller acts.

Not a Diamond day

WITH regards to Neil Diamond's concert at Hampden last week, organisers need to get their act together.

Many transport delays could have been avoided through better communication with gig goers and bus companies.

Elton John at Kilmarnock was far better organised.

Empty promises

YOUR correspondent (Letters, June 5) is spot on about the lack of bin collections.

In our area, Kings Park, we could use a two-weekly collection as the bins are easily full by this time.

Time to turn off TV

I DOUBT that any young people with a smidgen of intelligence will be swayed by the latest series of Big Brother.

I forgot it was coming back on television.

Time to get out and about for me.

National Service plan

LOOKING around our streets at night the lawless state of society becomes more apparent.

I am now in my 50s, but judging by some of the youth of today, and their parents, I fear the worst.

When I was in my teens the men I worked with were mostly ex-servicemen and had good values.

These men taught me not only a trade but respect and discipline, values which are sadly lacking in a vast majority of people today.

We should bring back some sort of National Service and enlist the battalions of reoffenders who seem to parade through our courts.

Old man river

JAMIE WEBSTER has done more than many to keep ship building alive on the Clyde (Evening Times, June 6).

He has over the years never wavered from his sole aim to achieve this.

I look forward to reading his book and hope it sells well.

No kiss and tell, no hype, just a working guy's view of the bigger picture. From an old NKS boy.

Soldiers pay penalty

WHY is anyone in the slightest bit surprised that traffic wardens are paid more than squaddies in Afghanistan and Iraq?

The reason that wardens are valued so highly is that they raise money. Soldiers cost money!

HOT TOPIC: Dismay at funding cuts for Science Centre

THE science centre is one of only two five-star tourist attractions in Glasgow.

It really is one of the city's crown jewels and should be rewarded for its success, rather than have its funding cut.

    THEBOYOFDESTINY, Glasgow

    Visitors back for more

I'VE been to the GSC twice and lots of people I know are repeat visitors too. It was a good day out.

    SLAM, Glasgow

    Great value family outing

I TOOK my family to the Science Centre the other day and they were running a fantastic deal. Yes, you pay £7.95 and £5.95, but for an extra £2 each you can visit the tower, the IMAX or the planetarium.

And to be honest that is good money for a family day out. The car park at the SECC is £4.50...now where would you park? As for the price, have you considered what you are paying for?

You are paying for exhibits, the staff to put on shows for you, the supplies they use for the shows and running the whole building in general.

All of this is so that you have a good time. The staff were wonderful, friendly and really great with kids.

    SCOTTZ, Glasgow

    Admission should be free

IT should be free. Why then, is it free to go into our museums, parks, art galleries, but so expensive to get in here?

    WEEGIELADY, Glasgow

    Entrance fee is essential

IT is a fair comment that other Glasgow museums and parks are free, but you should ask yourselves how much funding they receive in comparison to GSC?

I am sure GSC would like to be free but it only receives a fraction of the funding museums receive, so it has to charge.

    DR B, East Kilbride

    Too costly for U.S. tourists

FAR too pricey for me! I won't be going when I return to Scotland.

I checked on prices, and what with the double money on currency exchange, no thanks.

    CELTIC4, United States

    Self-sufficiency is best

A CERTAIN amount of funding is inevitable so that centres such as these can exist, but REAL efforts must be made to make it self funding.

    BANDSTAND...
The Bandstand in Kelvingrove Park is an asset that this City of Culture should never have allowed to fall into disrepair. It is in an idylic setting within the Park, with a great natural sound system.EH is correct when he says it should be renovated and put to the use it was intended. This is a gem that our council should recognise if they have any real take on Culture within the city.

With the record our council has of ditching its assets, and only doing as it sees fit, despite public wishes, it will take a full blown campaign, petition, public consultation and enquiry for G.C.C. actually sit up and take notice.

Sadly, the selective blindness of our councillors only seems to vanish, with their blinkers unleashed when an election is in the making - funny that isn't it.
