GLASGOW has been declared one of the top 10 cities in the world by a top tourist guide.

The Lonely Planet has listed the city alongside Antwerp, Beirut, Chicago, Lisbon, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Warsaw, and Zurich as one of the best places to visit.

Travel editor Tom Hall said: "The time has come for Lonely Planet to let one of its worst kept secrets out - Glasgow's got everything."

He said when they were putting together Best In Travel 2009 they were looking for the best places to go and things to do in the world right now.

"We're delighted to highlight such a fun, stylish city," he said.

The travel industry bible, which is published this week, states: "Scotland's biggest city has shaken off its shroud of industrial soot and shimmied into a sparking new designer gown.

TOP CITIES

GLASGOW is in good company in the list. The others (in no order) are:
Antwerp, Belgium
Beirut, Lebanon
Chicago, USA
Lisbon, Portugal
Mexico City, Mexico
Sao Paulo, Brazil
Shanghai, China
Warsaw, Poland
Zurich, Switzerland

"Forget about castles, kilts, bagpipes and tartan - you come to Glasgow for the cocktails, cuisine and designer chic, plus the legendary native wit."

The guide says Glasgow has long been famous for the Art Nouveau elegance of Charles Rennie Mackintosh but is now turning out new world-class designers.

It highlights women's fashion designer Jonathan Saunders, the Glasgow School of Art graduate whose fans include singers Madonna and Kylie Minogue.

The city's defining experiences are listed as cruising the Clyde by powerboat or paddle steamer, marvelling at the Mackintosh designed School of Art, and dallying in designer boutiques in the Merchant City before sipping cocktails in a Bath Street bar.

The guide also suggests: "Add your voice to the Hampden Roar at an international football match, then down a pint or six in the Horseshoe Bar before catching the next Franz Ferdinand at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut.

"Finally, stagger off for a late-night curry in the West End."

Homecoming Scotland, the year-long nationwide programme of events celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns aimed at attracting overseas Scots back home for a holiday, is cited as the biggest item on Glasgow's 2009 calendar.

But the guide also lists the 18-day International Comedy Festival, the International Festival of Contemporary Visual Art in April and the Six Cities Design Festival in May.

Under What's Hot' are Glasgow-born actor James McAvoy, pan-fried scallops and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

What's Not includes comedian Billy Connolly, deep fried Mars Bars and wearing a mackintosh.

The most bizarre site in the city is listed as the statue of the Duke of Wellington, outside the Gallery of Modern Art in Queen Street.

The guide says: "For almost two decades, the Duke has sported a jaunty traffic cone for a hat - an enduring symbol of Glasgow's irreverent sense of humour."

One Devonshire Gardens is named as the classic place to stay and The Ubiquitous Chip in Ashton Lane the classic restaurant experience.

The guide says: "Glasgow offers the UK's biggest shopaholic fix outside of London, with classy designer malls such as Princes Square and the Italian Centre complemented by innovative boutiques along Great Western Road and quirky little shops selling vintage clothing, second hand books and antiques in the lanes around Byres Road."

Richard Cairns, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said he was delighted the city was listed in the world's top 10.

He added: "It confirms something many of us have been saying for a very long time - that Glasgow is a truly great place for people to come and visit and do business."

Scott Taylor, chief executive of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: "Glasgow, Scotland with Style has helped position the city and the way people perceive Glasgow in the international market place. Lonely Planet is articulating that change in a way that is extremely exciting.."

City council leader Steven Purcell said: "This is a vote of confidence in Glasgow's ambitions to become one of the top cities in the world."

Ronnie Clydesdale, owner of the Ubiquitous Chip said: "To get this sort of recognition is truly wonderful."

"This is a vote of confidence in Glasgow's ambitions to become one of the top cities in the world."

No it's not Maggie, it's a cheap publicity stunt from a struggling publisher whose credibility in the travel guide market is looking ever-more weary, and now is trying to sell a few more copies of a guide that very few read and even fewer act upon.

The LP tends to be a bit idiosyncratic but it's still one of the top-selling guides, and this is still a great boost for Glasgow.

It's a shame that a few people here keep trying to do the city down - but you see the same on the Edinburgh Evening News pages, and it's still a wonderful place to visit too.

Why exactly do you have to look for the bad in this? Would you rather Glasgow was not in this list? Will being in the list have a detrimental effect upon Glasgow?
Posted by: Scotia74, Glasgow on 11:50am Wed 15 Oct 08
I've been to Mexico City and it was fantastic. Chicago's grid system was copied from Glasgow and I'm delighted that we're being mentioned in the same breath as them!!

Young travellers do take not of Lonely Planet and with so many jobs in the tourism sector, anything that helps to attract even more can only be good news at what is a troubling economic period.

I'd love to know if there is anything at all in Glasgow which makes Sydney happy ... I'd suggest playing with the buses, personally. Oh no, on second thoughts, probably not a good idea as he'd go on about congestion, high prices, poor driving, it all being the fault of everyone but him, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah ...

You've got that right Scottie-boy, it's just a pity that the tacky, boring, outdated slogan has managed to lump Glasgow in with three of the most murderous, crime-ridden cities in the world in Beirut, Mexico City and Sao Paulo.... and you SERIOUSLY think that there's anything 'stylish' in that? It'll take Glasgow years to shake of this slur...

Well done Glasgow!

Well done Sydney! Still trying to do down Glasgow and still quoting statistics out of context! These ratings are based on numbers of arrivals, not whether it's a good place to visit.

Doh! So there's no relation then?

I think you'll find the Euromonitor rankings which put London, Bangkok and Paris in its top 3 are a bit more reliable than one that puts Antwerp, Beiruit and Chicago.

"Dear old Glesga toon!" In a funny sort of way our city IS a major attraction for tourists. We have produced the world's finest ships and our steel is also world famous. Needless to say the biggest UK dollar earner is Scotch whisky and the Largest British 'invisible' income by far is Insurance, predominantly Scottish. Glasgow has given the world a veritable host of sensational inventions, too many to mention here. The city has probably the greatest amount of beautiful parks worldwide (Glescu...the dear green place) and is only a spit away from Loch Lomond and the Lanarkshire hills.

Moaners like Sydney can only decry the bad headlines, of which admittedly, we have plenty. But, come on fella, credit where it is due, Glesca is still birlin'.

So there's no relation then?

Some overlap but they are not measuring the same thing. One is based on numbers of arrivals (mostly not holiday tourists, I suspect), the other is the LP's opinion about holiday tourist destinations. I'm happy that LP think Glasgow is a great place to visit, and I agree. Your desire to run it down is well-established.

I've never been to Beruit but London, Bangkok, Paris, Antwerp and Chicago also great cities to visit.

Sydney's such a tube!! I'm convinced he lives in Edinburgh and works beside me! As someone who is exiled in Edinburgh from 9 to 5 on a daily basis, I get diatribe from people like Sydney on a daily basis.

Sydney's just a crabbit get. People like Sydney want to live in the past. They don't want to see our city do well. They are holding our city back.

Dear Sydney,

Go home. You are symbolic of the only thing wrong with Glasgow - the negative attitude of a small portion of its people. It's cool to be cool - don't you know that? Don't be a loser all your life.
Posted by: Sydney Meriwether, Glasgow on 4:09pm Wed 15 Oct 08
If you include Lesley Riddoch in that minority then I shall indded skip home tonight with a smile on my face and a warm sunny glow inside!

From today's Guardian on this very subject:

"Let's just pause there a second. The Index of Multiple Deprivation offers a list of Glasgow postcodes where almost EVERY HEALTH INDICATOR IS SUB-EAST EUROPEAN. Last year, the Office for National Statistics reported (pdf) that Glaswegians are dying from the effects of drink at twice the rate of everyone else. And I mean everyone. Not just the pussycat provinces of polite suburbia....

Glasgow's patterns of self-harm through drink and drugs and the continuing levels of POVERTY AND DESPAIR ARE IN A DIFFERENT LEAGUE – not just to the rest of the UK but to the rest of Scotland. And it is Britain's benefits capital too... A CITY MORE VIOLENT THAN NEW YORK AND SICKER THAN PARTS OF IRAQ!"

Aye, Lesley Riddoch, there's company for you, Sydney. I notice you didn't pick up her mis-spelling of Argyll Street (sic).

You forgot to mention that your article also mentions that "winning the Commonwealth games is a great achievement" and that "new Labour leader Steven Purcell is getting to grips with the squalor ignored by too many of his predecessors". Presumably you agree with that too?

None of which means Glasgow isn't a great place to vist, the point you miss yet again.

A quality ending from Ms Riddoch:
As a result the massive problems of Glasgow's underclass are tolerated and swept under the carpet. This is worse than killing with kindness. This is suffocating with civility.

And Lonely Planet has just guaranteed that we'll get another 18 months of it. Thanks.

Every time I land at Glasgow Airport from Amsterdam, Berlin, Barcelona, Prague, Copenhagen, New York or wherever else I've been, I always stop while I'm queuing up to pay £30 for a Renfrewshire Council Fiat van to drive me into town and thank God I am back from such dull and uninteresting places to the finest city on Earth.

Is this the same Lonely Planet that was found to fabricate its reports from ghost writers who never actually visited the place they wrote about?

Well from the posters who have been instructed to post on here from their political bosses's , it seems Glasgows future will be one of a playground for russian gangsters and their pornotrash dirtytanned girlfriends , sex tourists, brothel creepers and opportunists looking to assault the local women. Yeah i am sure Julia Hobsbawm's Editorial Intelligence bloggers, who have invaded this site have won the debate again. Not

I must confess I voted twice... my head is hanging in shame.

Still, I see the majority of voters now feel that Glasgow is a top 10 destination. I hope this doesn't cause Sydney to do anything rash...
