THE time for a change in the law to an opt out system for organ donation is now.

The charities holding talks today to take the campaign to the next level know it and the MSPs on the Scottish Parliament petitions committee know it having considered submissions from a range of experts.

The majority of the parliament, which would take the decision, has indicated it is in favour through backing the Evening Times petition and a motion by Glasgow SNP MSP Humza Yousaf.

It is now time for the Scottish Government to listen to the medical experts and the charities representing those waiting for a suitable donor.

Glasgow Labour MSP Anne McTaggart is now preparing a Member's Bill, but it would be unnecessary if ministers accepted the case and took government action, guaranteeing a bill would be passed.

The evidence is there from other countries where the availability of organs has increased and the safeguards of the system where everyone is considered a donor but everyone also has the right to opt out and family members will be consulted.

The support is there, the evidence is there and the safeguards are there.

All that is now needed is the will.
