NOT many people reach the grand old age of 103 and not many people are awarded a second British Empire Medal.

Margaret Miller from Glasgow has achieved both and her remarkable life and work for charity and helping others for more than 70 years makes her a most worthy recipient.

Mrs Miller is no stranger to readers of the Evening Times as she has also been recognised for her dedicated work as one of the select group to hold the title of Scotswoman of the Year and she also earned a Community Champion award.

As well as the usual list of celebrities and business people, the New Year Honours list also recognises the work of other campaigners and volunteers in the city such as Particia Cockburn and Maria Righetti.

We would like to offer our sincerest congratulations to Mrs Miller and the other community workers and volunteers who were honoured in this year's list and wish them many more years of working to make the world a better place.

The Evening Times will continue in 2014 to seek out and pay our own tribute to those working, campaigning and volunteering in our communities.

And to all our readers and their families around the world, we would like to wish you a very Happy New Year.
