AS Nicola Sturgeon is about to make history as Scotland's first woman First Minister with a message to young women that they can aspire to top jobs, we decided to look back at others who have scaled the heights.

It was undoubtedly more difficult in the past for women in politics to make their mark, but Glasgow has been home to many such women or the place where they made their name.

Even in this age of equality, women in many walks of life still find barriers to career progression whether it is employment practices or male-dominated workplaces.

Where legislation is needed it should be passed and where it has been passed, such as equal pay more than 40 years ago, it must be implemented.

Glasgow is home to an unquantifiable number of strong, positive women and not just in politics, as we report this week, but in workplaces, hospitals, schools, offices and most importantly homes throughout the city.

Like Mary Barbour and the others we feature today, Ms Sturgeon will undoubtedly be an inspiration to many more women looking to make their mark on the world.

We wish them all success.
