Bus only lanes under scrutiny

EVERYONE wants to ensure the traffic on our busy main roads is able to flow as freely as possible.

The Fastlink service should improve public transport from the city centre to the SECC and to the South Glasgow Hospitals site in Govan, which will lead to an increase in people visiting the area.

However some people are unable to take buses for mobility reasons and will rely on taxis to take them to the hospital for appointments.

Passengers stuck in traffic watching the meter clock up while buses whizz past could be forgiven for feeling short changed.

The use of bus lanes and enforcement cameras has proved a controversial subject in the city.

Despite the council stating there was time for taxi drivers to respond and object during the consultation, the surprise of Glasgow Taxis when the Evening Times reported the story suggests a more pro-active consultation could have been required in this case.

Improved transport links are needed across the city and better connectivity between modes of transport is welcome, which Fastlink will hopefully provide.

But taxis are also a necessary mode of transport in Glasgow, and their needs must be taken into consideration so that people are not unduly penalised.
