The calls for a crackdown on the weapons has been long and loud ever since to try and prevent another family suffering the same pain.
The Government's proposals will require owners to have their guns licensed and while this will not ensure there are none held illegally it will help reduce the numbers.
The plan is not for an outright ban as some people had called for, but instead greater regulation which still allows the many legitimate users to keep and fire the weapons.
There are legitimate reasons including pest control and sport and those engaged in such activities are generally law abiding, keep their weapon is a secure place and they should have nothing to fear from a licensing regime.
The target group of this new law is people who think it is fun to fire airguns at passers-by in the street with no regard for the safety of others.
If this law takes guns from the irresponsible owners and makes it more difficult for them to obtain them in the first place then it is a step towards safer communities and comes not a moment too soon.
