THERE is nothing quite so effective in inspiring people to take up sport than seeing someone else achieve success.

The Commonwealth Games encouraged many people to get up and get active with athletics clubs reporting large increase in new membership enquiries.

While the exploits of Usain Bolt and our own Lynsey Sharp and Eilidh Child will get young people out and into sport, peer groups can have a significant role in encouraging and maintaining an interest which can become a passion.

How many have been introduced to a football or netball club by a friend and a lifelong love of the sport develops?

The Young Ambassadors Programme is a welcome project, supporting and training young people to encourage others into sport - having those who are already hitting the heights giving them advice is invaluable.

We need as many young people involved in sport, at whatever level is suitable, for the future health of our city and country.

Everyone who passes on their experience and enthusiasm can lead to many more getting active in 2014. That's the goal.
