GLASGOW does not confer its highest honour lightly and only those with impeccable credentials are considered for Freedom of the City.
Homegrown sporting stars who have hit the heights on the international stage, such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Kenny Dalglish or entertainers such as Billy Connolly, have been given the award.
Also it has been used to recognise the struggles of towering figures fighting to address injustice, including Nelson Mandela and Aung San Suu Kyi and show the city's solidarity with their cause.
The award to the Royal Marines recognises the invaluable role they play in defending and protecting our country and the permanent link with the city through its reserves.
The parade on Saturday will be an opportunity for people in Glasgow to say thank you and recognise the bravery and dedication of the Royal Marines around the world whether in conflict, peacekeeping or humanitarian aid efforts.
The Freedom of the City is reserved for the very best in their field and no one can doubt the Royal Marines fall into that category.
With this prestigious award, Glasgow salutes you.
