However, as with anywhere that attracts large numbers of people it will also attract those who wish to commit crime.

Over the festive period there will be more people out in the city's pubs, clubs, restaurants and shops and for many it will not a regular part of their routine.

The police have warned people to be on their guard against thieves looking for easy targets to snatch mobile phones, bags and wallets from mostly in busy pubs.

The advice is simple keep an eye on your belongings, leave nothing lying around and be wary of anyone you don't know acting suspicious.

The number of phone thefts as a staggering amount for short period of time as the thieves can act quickly and move swiftly on to their next victim.

Many people will be out in the city centre tonight enjoying the night life before Christmas and police and other safety agencies will be out too.

But the message is keep yourself safe, keep your belongings safe and follow the advice and instructions of police, taxi marshals and others who have your best interests and safety at heart.
