THE increase in the murder rate in Glasgow this year is obviously a concern, but should not be a cause to panic.

The trend in recent years has been downward and this year the detection rate has been 100%, with killers being locked up.

The wider crime statistics in the city show other serious violent crime also decreasing and the city centre a far safer place than in years gone by.

However, any increase in any type of serious crime in the city is a development that must be monitored by the police and understood.

For the public's part we can be reassured by the detection rate and we must all remember our duty to assist in any way we can in bringing killers and criminals to justice.

The more assistance police get during investigations the more likely it is they will catch the culprits and justice can be done.

The overall crime figures show Glasgow being home to fewer and fewer of the serious violent offences that were once all too common.

There is still work to be done and too many people have had their lives destroyed by crime

But together we can help make and keep our city safe.
