THE agony and anguish that bereaved parents went through when they discovered there were remains is unimaginable to those of us who have not suffered the same.

The practices at the crematoria in different parts of the country were not acceptable and rightly have been stopped and new procedures put in place.

The measures announced by Glasgow City Council should be sufficient to put people's minds at rest that in future parents will receive ashes from their infant and be able to choose how and when to dispose of them to suit their own specific circumstances.

While the investigation by Dame Elish Angiolini continues and it is to be hoped every one affected receives the answers and information they deserve it is important that the lessons from this scandal are learned.

It has been said by many throughout this process, but this is something that can never be allowed to happen again and by following simple new procedures it never will.

Anything which can add to the pain of a family at losing a child must be actively avoided by all concerned.
