STUDENTS bring a huge benefit to Glasgow, adding to the city's economy, its cultural diversity and its vibrancy.

The three universities, Art School, Royal Conservatoire and several further education colleges make Glasgow a big student city and with the city's nightlife and cultural attractions, it is easy to see why it is so popular.

Housing the growing number who study here is a challenge, and a mix of accommodation is required with purpose-built flats, halls of residence and private rental all having a role to play.

There have been concerns among people living beside a high number of multiple-occupancy student flats, with contrasting lifestyles posing problems when sharing a tenement.

Also some are concerned that parts of the city become overpopulated with students as more big developments are awarded planning permission.

The West End and other areas benefit hugely from students and when concerns are raised about new student flat developments, they should be heard - but we must also remember the relationship between the students and the city is ultimately one of mutual benefit.
