LONELINESS can affect people of all ages and in a variety of situations and as the report today shows can have a damaging effect on health.
The services run by local councils and voluntary agencies can help people connect with others in their local area and provide a place for them to meet and socialise.
In the modern day with families not always living close to one another it is easy to see why older people especially can become detached and their only company and voice they hear is through their television.
The inquiry into social isolation by the equalities commission can be effective if it understands the feelings of individuals and identifies good examples of services which can help alleviate their suffering.
We can all play our part of course, by keeping in tough with older people in our own families and by keeping an eye out for our neighbours.
Particularly in the cold, dark winter months, a kind work can make all the difference.
