GLASGOW pays tribute today on the 11th day of the 11th month to those who gave their lives in conflict.

Like many others, this city sent many men head off to fight in the First World War unaware of the scale of death and destruction it would lead to and of the extraordinary number who would never return home.

With the one hundredth anniversary of the start of the war this year, commemorations are even more poignant.

However, the Great War is not the only conflict that we remember on this day, and since Armistice Day in 1918 the number of men and women who have given their live in service has only increased in many wars, notably the Second World War, and continues to do so.

The sacrifice of those who never returned and suffering of their families is only fully understood by those who experience it.

The First World War, which led to Remembrance Day being observed, may have been a century ago, but the duty on us to pay tribute and learn from history has not waned.

Honouring the lives given by so many is as important now as it has been at any time in the last century.
