THE increase in the number of sex attacks reported by young women today is a hugely worrying development.

It is imperative that all cases, no matter the age of the victim are treated with the same importance and given the same support.

Recent attacks in the city centre and the South Side of the city have caused alarm in Glasgow and every effort must be made by the Police and community to bring those responsible to justice.

The recent Jimmy Savile revelations has damaged faith in the justice system, which allowed his heinous crimes over many decades to go unpunished.

However, it is essential we are all able to put our trust in the police and courts, who have made many improvements in recent years to support victims of sexual abuse.

No matter the age of the victim, their circumstances or the position held by their attacker, they need to feel confident the system is on their side and be able to seek the justice they deserve.

The increase we have reported today could be as a result of increased awareness and confidence to report a crime, in which case, while concerning, should be welcomed.

Ultimately it has to be the case that those responsible for sexual abuse and violence are stopped and punished by the law.
