Readers give their views on the city council's plan for a 5mph speed limit for bikes in city parks

I am outraged about the latest insane proposals by the council. How dare they try to limit cyclists to 5mph in city parks. That's not cycling. It's called walking.

Cyclists and pedestrians are more concerned with irresponsible dog owners, who let their animals run amok. I am sick to death of my bike and myself being covered in dog filth, not to mention countless near accidents involving strays in the Botanics/Kelvingrove parks.

We are always being lectured to get out in the fresh air to exercise/leave the car at home etc., so why demonise the very people who are using the city's parks?

Street fears

IF THEY are going to have speed limits in parks, shouldn't the powers that be bring in laws about riding bikes in pedestrian areas, such as Sauchiehall Street/ Argyle Street? Or are they going to wait until somebody is seriously injured or killed?

As it is, the police seem to ignore them when they go whizzing by them.

Fine offenders

The council has got it wrong, there should be no cycling on pavements or public walkways in city centres.

Cyclists should be told to dismount or be fined just the same as litter louts.

Common sense

The proposal to curb the speed of cyclist in parks is not for their safety, but for the safety of other park users. I know of at least one lady who was knocked down by a speeding cyclist in the park, and have observed and have personal experience of numerous "near-misses".

While I agree with the cyclists who say that it is simply common sense that is needed, it is exactly that quality that a significant minority of cyclists do not possess.
