I WAS sitting in Glasgow's George Square admiring tourists taking pictures and respecting the cenotaph. However, I noted that the benches could do with a little tender loving care, as the paint and varnish had worn off. I would urge the council to give them a lick of paint and possibly install some spikes on the monuments as well, as the bird mess is appalling.

Ian Stewart states in Tuesday's Evening Times letters, that Scotland voted no last September 'resoundingly'. I hardly think it was resounding given the lies and half truths emanating from the No camp which succeeded in frightening many voters.

Apart from this, the Scottish people have a right to demand another referendum if they see that once again they are being treated with complete disdain by the Westminster old boys club and the suffering heaped on families forced into poverty by Tories who think we don't deserve any better.

Are people just supposed to sit back for the next five years and accept this onslaught? No chance.

REGARDING the G51parking row, to ask local residents to pay for a parking permit is beyond a joke. Another money making exercise in the making. Otherwise local residents would be given free permits, why charge these residents for the privilege of parking at their own home? The meaning of fairness is something which after all these years appears to have eluded those employed at Glasgow City council. There are countless instances of such unfairness over the years from GCC and still it continues to this day. Good luck local residents.

WHAT a heartbreaking story on the little boy with meningitis. It must have been a worrying time for little Euan Couttie and his family. I am just glad that the youngster is on the mend. There really doesn't seem to be any more that the parents could have done. It just goes to show that people need to be aware of this dreadful illness and I hope charities involved in research for the illness get all the support they need.

THE traffic light correspondence in the Evening Times seems to be hotting up week to week. I encountered a great experience today. My lights had gone to green and I was about to set off around a corner when a bus drove right past me. Now can someone tell me how that happened? Perhaps a technical issues with all lights at green - I don't think so.
