So, Glasgow City Council aren’t managing to keep the city streets clean, Monday's Evening Times. What about a campaign entitled “People Make Glasgow Clean.” Regularly, armed with a litter picker and a plastic bin bag I have successfully picked up litter in the local streets where I live. Other than getting the odd look, or indeed being “blanked,” from passersby who I am sure are convinced I am (repeatedly) doing Community Service, the result is satisfying and provides the opportunity to get some exercise and fresh air.

Who knows, perhaps in time the passersby may stop for a chat or, better still, may decide to help by cleaning up the own patch. Get enough people on board and the “Dear Place” may be both “Clean” and "Green.” If the campaign was successful, conceivably, Glasgow City Council could formalise it and give the people who provide the litter pick-up sessions a reduction in their Council Tax.

A GLASGOW teenager is to become the first pupil from his school to go to Oxford University.

Jack Wands has secured a place as the prestigious institution to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) - following in the footsteps of prime ministers.

Here is what our readers thought:

Happy for the lad but I'll be happier when it's not newsworthy for a state-school pupil to be accepted by Oxford. Oxford accepting the lad smacks of tokenism to me. Saddened me that his headteacher felt the need to go cap in hand to the head of St Aloysius for help - sums up the cosy relationship between private schools and Oxbridge.

Good luck to the boy. It won't be easy for his family to fork out £27,000 and that will be just for starters. For some of the people he will be rubbing shoulders with that will be pocket change. Hopefully he will become a politician that doesn't forget his roots and does some good for the ordinary person in the street.

Well done Jack! Sounds like you have super-supportive parents, you're brainy and lucky, a perfect combination! Best of luck to you!

REGARDS the Donald Trump UK ban debate, I hope all the money wasters who signed this daft petition are proud of

themselves, they should be made to pay for the parliamentary time, including expenses, that this has wasted
